On October 12, 2008, Children's Home Society of Florida held their 8th Annual Claws for a Cause Luncheon. Once again, Joe’s Stone Crab graciously opened its doors to welcome and delight guests of CHS with stone crabs and other fine dishes.
Almost 400 of Miami’s most prominent professionals and their families gathered to support CHS and help the children and families in our programs. Guests included Miami- Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman, Bunny Bastian, Mike Fernandez, Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, Former Florida Supreme Court Justice Raoul Canteras and Greenberg Traurig CEO Cesar L. Alvarez.
Guests enjoyed a reception with cocktails sponsored by Bacardi followed by the fabulously extravagant live auction that included trips to the Isle of Capri, Paris, San Francisco and China. Finally, the much-anticipated stone crab lunch was mouth-watering. The successful event raised more than $100,000 to help serve our children and families!
Jackie Gonzalez, Executive Director of CHS, Chairwoman of the Board Karen Throckmorton and Claws for a Cause Event Chairs Karen Throckmorton. George Fernandez, Joni Armstrong Coffey and Jenny Nieveen thank our guests for attending. Major sponsors included DYL; Ryder; Charles & Karen Throckmorton; Greenberg Traurig; Miami Parking Authority; Kendall Coffey and Joni Armstrong Coffey; Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines; HUMANA; MBF Healthcare Partners, L.P.; and Diane Walder, M.D.
CHS is the statewide leader in providing high quality, community based solutions to meet the needs of children and families in the community serving more than 2,500 children per month and almost 30,000 each year, providing a wide range of social services including emergency shelters, foster care, adoption, residential group homes, day care for medically needy children, out of school programs for at-risk youth, family and individual counseling, child abuse prevention and intervention services, home-based services, help for pregnant teens and first-time mothers, mentoring programs, family preservation, and a range of education programs. The vision and hope at CHS is that in the future, with the unwavering support of people interested in the children of Florida, there will no longer be a need for this kinds of agencies.
