America Cancer Society Mothers Of The Year Luncheon
02/24/2009 - By The Plaza’s Grand Ballroom, New York
Multi-talented NBC Today host and the afternoon’s Mistress of Ceremonies, Kathie Lee Giffored, led over 400 guests in “blowing the whistle” on cancer at the American Cancer Society’s annual “Mothers of the Year” award luncheon.
The resounding shrills in The Plaza’s Grand Ballroom symbolized everyone’s commitment to the fight against cancer. The luncheon was in honor of this year’s “Mothers of the Year 2009” in the person of NBC’s Ann Curry and renowned breast cancer surgeon Dr. Alexandra Heerdt of Memorial-Sloan Kettering.
Benefit Co-Chairs Cynthia Lufkin, Cricket Burns, Roni Cowan, Eva Mohr, Marisa Marchetto, Caroline Cronson, Kathie Lee Gifford, Jacqueline Togut were joined by the NBC Today Show family such as Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Al Roker and Hoda Kotb, and noted members of the New York City social and philanthropic community such as Chairman of Special Events Diana Feldman and husband, Richard Feldman, Dan Lufkin, Evelyn Lauder, Charlotte Ford, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Wendy Carduner, Muffie Potter Aston, US Ambassador to Jamaica Brenda Johnson, Elyse Newhouse, Gillian Miniter, Fe Fendi, Heather Randall, Margo Nederlander, Matilda Cuomo and daughter Maria Cuomo Cole, Rachel Hovnanian, Wendy Carduner, Myra Biblowit to name a few, and of course, family and friends of the honorees.
Ann Curry was a “no-show” for a very good reason. Ann was flying in from Chad, and could not make it on time for the award presentation. Her husband Brian Ross was on hand to sing high praises to his better half and friend Meredith Vieira stepped up to the plate, accepted the honor for Ann and delivered Ann’s remarks.
Dr. Alexandra Heerdt’s husband, Dr. Paul Heerdt and 11-year old daughter Emma Heerdt presented the award to Alexandra. Emma’s briliiant and heartwarming remarks stole the whole show. Guests who attended the luncheon were left speechless!
The luncheon raised nearly $350,000 to support American Cancer Society programs and services for cancer patients and their families, including Hope Lodge New York City, which provides free temporary lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers while undergoing treatments, and Reach to Recovery, a 30-year program which pairs trained volunteer breast cancer survivors with newly diagnosed cancer patients to help them cope with their diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
