11/04/2009 - By Gotham Hall in New York City
Israel Cancer Research Fund Bestows Tower of Hope 2009 Awards
A wonderful evening to benefit the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) was held the Gotham Hall in New York City. More than four hundred hundred guests gathered to pay tribute to Dr. Barbara Edelstein, a Diagnostic Radiologist, widely recognized as an expert in Mammography and OB-GYN Sonography and founder of Women's Radiology; Dr. Mark Sultan, Plastic Surgeon and Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St. Lukes/Roosevelt and Beth Israel Medical Centers; Nobel Laureate Dr Richard Axel, University Professor and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and Yaakov Elkon, Chairman and CEO of Graphnet, a global leader in the computer-based telecommunications industry. Benjamin Brafman, a noted litigator, served as master of ceremonies and Robert and Andrea Greene were the gala chairpersons. The musical host was Greg Denard and Bardon Palomo created the evening's floral arrangements.
Ambassador Shariv, the Consul General of Israel in New York , and ICRF Grant Recipient Dr. Yoav Henis of the department of neurobiology at Tel Aviv University spoke about the importance of the in search to find a cure for cancer.
Dr. Yashar Hirshaut, a leading breast oncologist and chairman of the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), reminded the guests that "the purpose of the Israel Cancer Research Fund and this event is to fund the new generation of cancer researchers in Israel who are working on the cutting edge of bio-technology and medical technology. Per capita, Israel has the world's largest concentration of cancer researchers but insufficient funds to sponsor promising projects which could enhance all mankind. We stand for saving lives. We stand for relieving suffering".
President Harriet Elisofon acknowledged the many successes of ICRF's past and present grant awardees who include winners of the Nobel Prize, Wolf Prize and Israel Prize. "It is our belief that the efforts of our scientists will continue to benefit Israel and all mankind," Elisofon said.
Since its inception in 1975, The Israel Cancer Research Fund (www.icrfonline.org) has supported and encouraged innovative research by Israeli scientists and has been the largest single source of private funds for cancer research in Israel. ICRF has awarded 1700 grants valued at almost $39 million to leading Israeli doctors and scientists engaged in cutting edge basic research.
