Palm Beach Post Book Launch: Palm Beach County at 100 – Our History, Our Home

HISTORICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES CENTENNIAL BOOK LAUNCH

Reception benefits the Historical Society of Palm Beach County

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County and more than 300 guests celebrated the launch of Palm Beach at 100, Our History Our Home Nov 5th at the historic 1916 Courthouse in West Palm Beach. The much anticipated book, published by the Palm Beach Post in collaboration with the Society, was premiered at a lavish cocktail reception featuring a recreation of The Hut, complete with drive-in fare, and freshly harvested produce, including stalks of Glades sugar cane and the first of the season sweet corn from Wayne Boynton of Boynton Farms, a member of the Society’s Board of Governors. In keeping with the centennial theme of the evening, historic images of Palm Beach County adorned the interior walls of the courtyard tent. Guests of the evening received a copy of the full-color, 304 page hard cover book which is slated to be THE history book of Palm Beach County, and is available for purchase through the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and The Palm Beach Post.

Palm Beach at 100, Our History Our Home is a heartfelt tribute to memories shared by Palm Beach County residents that offers a foundation to those newer to the area, verifying that Palm Beach County is a diverse pot that has not yet melted. Throughout the century the land, the people, and the culture have evolved, yet for all the advancements made over the years, much of the harmony of the county lies in what will always remain the beautiful multiplicity of land, people and cultures moving forward at their own pace, style and will. The remarkable memories documented in the book are treasures to hold on to, learn from, grow with, and share with others as we move through the next 100 years.

Songs of Old Florida filled the air as The Fulton-Holland Railroad Band, a quartet of local musicians comprised of educators from the School District of Palm Beach County, serenaded guests. Drive-in décor simulating the West Palm Beach Hut inspired a menu of mini burgers, hot dogs, French fries, conch and catfish fritters, milk shakes, and ice cream floats. Grouper fingers, gator bites, ginger shrimp, tenderloin sandwiches, pork and pineapple kebobs and five spice ribs completed the menu of regionally sourced fare by the catering masters at Sandy James Catering. Guests were encouraged to participate in the “100 Year Scavenger Hunt” through the Johnson History Museum sponsored by the Society’s Young Friends. Proceeds raised from the event support the educational programs of the Society and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum.

Attending the event were some of the individuals whose families and businesses have contributed to the milestones of the last 100 years. On hand to enjoy the evening were authors Jan Tuckwood and Eliot Kleinberg of The Palm Beach Post and Debi Murray and Richard Marconi of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, twenty members of the Pat and Richard Johnson family, for whom the History Museum is named, local celebrity Greg Rice, Mrs. M. Pope Anthony, Susan and Mark Elhilow, Mary Jo and Vince Elhilow, the Martin Murphy family, the James Pressly family, Penny and Alan Murphy, Monique Merrill, Harvey Oyer, Laurel Baker, Gary and Vince Burhardt, Wayne Boynton, Rena and John Blades, Bill Kopp, Krista and David Basore, Nicole and David Atkinson, Katie and Ben Alexander, Lori and Jon Volk, Mark Stevens, Mrs. Owen Gassaway, Kay Rybovich, Dr. Edward Eissey, School Board Chairman William Graham, Jorge Pesquera, Jim Ponce, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kassatly, Judge Edward Rodgers, Commissioners Jeff Koons, William Moss, Molly Douglas, and Mayor Lois Frankel.
