Wingspan Arts provides arts-in-education services to public schools in the New York City metropolitan area in the fields of theater, music, dance, film and visual arts. Founded in 2001 in response to the lack of arts instruction in public schools, Wingspan Arts began its programming in one classroom, and in just six years, has expanded to over 30 programs in 18 schools. We collaborate with the New York City Department of Education, and other local school districts to provide a direct experience in the arts to more than 3,500 children. Wingspan Arts employs 231 ethnically diverse teaching artists, who have received considerable recognition in the areas of theater, dance, film and music, and who specialize in such fields as musical theater dance, singing, Afro-Caribbean percussion, stage combat, dialects and Shakespeare, and sketch comedy. They have a gift for sharing their artistic passion with students, many of whom are from low-income neighborhoods. Students gain a better understanding of a complicated, changing world as they study, learn to perform and express their feelings through the arts.
